There are some primary things to understand when you want to address the topic of how to prevail over life’s disappointments. We need to know how Satan uses disappoints to his advantage. And what we must do to defeat him- commit to the word of God and prayer.

Quite often, I will help my clients to develop some helpful coping techniques that have proven effective.

  • Developing a good exercise routine
  • Change to a healthy diet
  • Getting enough rest
  • Writing out the negative emotions
  • Spend time helping someone need
  • Writing about things to be thankful for
  • Developing a prayer schedule
  • Developing a Bible study schedule

Admittedly, not everyone is open to all of these. These skills can be practiced together or separately. Each one could hold it’s own in a blog post, For now, I want to focus on the two of them that have provided the most help to the most amount of people- Prayer and God’s word.

Let me ask you, “Where is your faith in relationship to all of life’s difficulties?”

We all experience disappointments on occasions. If you allow God to work in your life by going to Him and His word during the time of difficulty, you’ll discover yourself in an area of contentment. You can experience life abundantly, the way Christ intends.

As a result, you may be the form of overcomer God has destined you to be, and you will have defeated the devil’s efforts to put you down.

I would love to share with you about having the sort of faith that is important to emerge as an overcomer in all conditions so that you do not discover yourself turning so weary that you begin to lose heart and the faith that God has breathed into you.

Luke 8:22-25: But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in jeopardy. And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But He said to them, “Where is your faith?”

In this case, Jesus began demonstrating to His disciples that He had power and authority over every situation in existence. If we are to place our trust and faith in Jesus, He will be there for us irrespective of how hard or distressing the conditions we are facing appear to be. Wherein is your faith in relationship to all that you are going through?

Have you ever reached the place in which you cannot take it anymore?

Life’s Situations That Try Our Faith

What form of conditions and trials are trying your faith and seem impossible in your eyes?

  • Financial problems
  • God’s chastening
  • The hardness of the way
  • Numbers 21:4
  • Marital problems
  • Sickness, health or death
  • Broken relationships
  • Busy lifestyle
  • Divine delay in God’s promises
  • Emotional issues
  • Family problems, children, etc.

In each of these areas, we are liable to disappointment, difficulty, and heartache.

In which is your faith in each of those areas?

Jesus has given us authority and power over all the problems of life. He desires us to be overcomers in all that we do and is derived our way.

John 16:33: These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

The problem is that we have an enemy who desires to exploit the areas in our lives, which can be inflicting us heartache, disappointment, and difficulty. His goal is to make us weary and lose heart.

How To Prevail Over Life’s Disappointments- Satan’ Objective

We need to recognize that we have an enemy with an objective. He is like a thief who’s aim is to damage, steal, and kill.

John 10:10: The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.

Daniel 7:25: He shall speak pompous words against the Highest, shall persecute (wear out) the saints of the Highest, and shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time and times and half a time.

1. Satan’s Objective Is To Wear Us Down

Satan’s objective in attacking us in our minds-in our innermost beings-is to wear us down until we become spiritually weary and ‘faint’ in our minds. He is aware of that if our thoughts are vulnerable, we will be weak, and he will be able to gain access to our minds and defeat us. How to prevail over life’s disappointments is to stay committed to Christ because the enemy wants to destroy us. He attacks us when we are vulnerable.

Becoming ‘spiritually weary’ is one of the riskiest positions you can be. Satan is intensifying his attacks on the Church. He is going to try to wear you out literally. And unless you are aware of what is happening and prepare yourself for the battle, you will not be able to stand. You will live in a cycle of defeat.

Satan will attack you through your circumstances so that you will become caught in a cycle of defeat. In this cycle, he will bombard your mind with fear, worry, and doubt until you become spiritually weary. At this point, if you ‘faint’ in your mind, you will become discouraged, lose hope, resign yourself to accept your circumstances. Your discouragement will lead to disaster, where you will be spiritually immobilized, and you will be trapped in this vicious cycle of defeat.

Hebrews 12:1-3: Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

The Greek word for ‘faint’ means ‘to unloose; to relax and so, to make weak.’ Satan wants to weaken you; He wants you to become so overwhelmed by your circumstances, so weary fighting the battles you have day after day in fulfilling the ministry God has given you, that you faint…relax in your mind. He wants your mind to be spiritually tired and weak, so you will:

  • Let up on your intensified prayer time
  • Cut down on time you read and study the word
  • Stop resisting his attacks
  • Stop taking control of your thoughts
  • Stop casting out doubt and unbelief
  • Stop releasing your faith
  • Stop walking in LOVE

Paul cautioned the Church not to let Satan get the upper hand. The method for this is to understand the strategy of the enemy.

The first method of attack is to get us confused about God’s word and character. Notice his first attack on humanity was to create doubt about God’s word and character (Genesis chapter 3).

Corinthians 11:3 (NIV): I am afraid, lest as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds should be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.

The enemy labors to undermine our faith. He brings confusion to our minds. He knows the word of God. And is afraid of its power. He knows the power of prayer. So he didn’t want us believing the word or to live a life led by prayer. The enemy knows the practice of prayer; Bible study will transform us into mature believers.

If the devil can get us distracted by a problem-to, let resentment guide our thinking or convince us to make a difficult situation seem larger than life-he has the upper hand. This will help him to accomplish his purposes. This is why it is so important to let the word of God guide our thoughts. Every thought that is not in line with the word should be bound and cast out of our minds and heart. See 2 Corinthians 10:5.

The enemy strives to disrupt our relationship with Christ by cutting the lines of communication. If we are not receiving the connection we need from Christ; we will become weak. It’s in the deficiency that he attacks because our defenses are down.

Mark 3:27: No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods unless he first binds the strong man. And then he will plunder his house.

Satan can not enter into a healthy Christians house and spoil the good deeds. So he first puts that strong Christian into bondage. This puts us into a weak state. Only then he will be able to pollute the good deeds we accomplish for Christ.

Without a doubt, the enemy wears us down ultimately, destroying our testimony about our faith.

Daniel 7:25 (speaking of the devil): shall speak pompous words against the Highest, Shall persecute the saints of the Highest, And shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time and times and half a time.

Satan is a liar! He is the author of lies, see John 8:44. We see this clearly in Genesis chapter 3. When he first spoke to humans, he speaks suspiciously of God’s word. He continued by speaking a lie with confidence as if it was the truth; tell the humans that they would not die. In John 8:44, we hear the writer explain that Satan avoids the fact. He is the epitome of evil. He wants to prevent us from knowing the truth.

Jesus explains this in Mark 4:1-9. His explanation He shows the word of God as being like a seed of faith. But Satan quickly comes to steal the truth form us.

If he can cause us to sin or even just become to busy doing God’s work (Galatians 6:9), he will try to implant lies into our minds and hearts. If he can keep us busy with seemingly good things so that we are too tired to pray, or too sleepy to read the word of God as he pushes us near the cliffs of temptation, it will be an easy task for him to push us over the cliff. Beware of the good being the strategy of the enemy.

You may be at this dangerous point right now, where you are spiritually weary, and you have ‘fainted’ in your mind. You may be so tired of the spiritual battles that you are ready to give up. You may be tired of resisting temptation. Your mind may be in constant turmoil-you may be at a point of depression, or severely oppressed by the enemy. WHATEVER strategy Satan may be using to attack your mind, DON’T GIVE IN! God has made it possible for you to live in victory over ALL the power of the enemy. The moment you ‘faint in your mind’ and stop resisting his attacks, you are surrendering yourself into his hands. You are defeated when you fail to fight.

2. Satan Feeds On Our Vulnerabilities

It’s as if Satan feeds off of our weakness. He seems stronger when we are mentally drained. We know how to prevail over life’s disappointments is to remain committed to Christ because the enemy wants to destroy us. He does not fight fairly. He ambushes us when we have distractions.

Luke 4:13: Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

We recognize that the devil feeds on our weaknesses and delights in exploiting our inclined factors, so let’s observe these areas over again that have the capability of bringing weariness to our lives. These are all common causes of discouragement that make us weary in doing well:

  • Financial difficulties
  • God’s chastening
  • The hardness of the way
  • Numbers 21:4
  • Marital problems
  • Sickness, health or death
  • Broken relationships
  • Busy lifestyle
  • Divine delay in God’s promises
  • Emotional issues
  • Family problems, children, etc.

Are you ready to drown in your sorrows because of the discouragement or sadness you feel in any of these areas?

You ought to become aware of the area where you are inclined to give up. Then use the shield of faith and the belt of truth.

Ephesians 6:13-16: Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

Apply The Shield Of Faith

How To Prevail Over Life’s Disappointments- Apply The Shield of Faith

Now that we acknowledge that we’ve got a vicious and unrelenting enemy who’s out to get us and to put on us down, what are some realistic approaches in which we can apply the shield of faith against him?

1 John 5:4: For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world; our faith.

Understand Where The Source of Your Faith Is

Hebrews 12:2:…looking unto Jesus, the author, and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The source of our faith is in Jesus Christ and what He has carried out for us. He is the Writer and Finisher of our faith and will continually be on our side no matter what.

Usually, amid life’s hardships, the accuser of the brethren comes to us and attempts to convince us that we’re unworthy of God’s help in our lives.

That is a lie of the enemy to prevent us from receiving the assist we want. You have got to know that if God is for you, who can be against you. This has to be the influential heart leader.

Romans 8:31: What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Isaiah 43:1-2: But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.

Isaiah 40:31: But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

There were many Bible characters, who for one reason or another, became weary and discouraged over their situations in life, but in the end became overcomers, because they knew where their faith stood.

Moses Pleaded For God To Kill Him

When the people of Israel began to complain about eating manna all the time, Moses becomes so stressed he wanted to die. Moses stated, “If this is the way it’s going to be, please kill me here and now, for the burden is too heavy to carry” – Numbers 11:11-15. Moses’ preservation was in the fact that he was taking his burden to the source of his faith.

Joshua Wanted To Give Up

Joshua, the top-notch conqueror, was so discouraged and depressed at a point that he became prepared to stop and give up and wished he was back in the wilderness where there were not so many enemies.

But, he took his burden to the source of his faith. He asked God for help. God informed him what to do and how to overcome – Joshua 7:7. We should do the same.

Apply The Word of Truth To Your Situation

We not only have the shield of faith to protect us from Satan’s fiery darts, but we also have the belt of truth and the sword of the Spirit to apply to our nonsecular arsenal.

Psalms 119:24-25: Your testimonies also are my delight And my counselors. My soul clings to the dust; Revive me according to Your word.

Every one is liable to the various conditions that attempt our faith. None of us is excluded.

But we can extend the misery of the situation in our lives when we don’t apply the word of God to the circumstances.

On the other hand, when the word of God is applied, it will not only revive our spirits, but it will start to make the crooked paths straight once again.

The word of God is the best tool to use in a stressful situation.

Romans 10:17: So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Job understood the significance of being revived according to the word. He possibly experienced as plenty of hardship and disappointment as every person, and his testimony was that he esteemed God’s word more valuable than the food itself.

Job 23:11-12: My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside. 12) I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

Find God’s Purpose & Build Kingdom Character

Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

All of the areas referred to in this message, plus others constitute possibilities for God’s purpose to return forth in our lives to a higher degree.

They represent opportunities to construct a godly character in our lives. While we approach those situations with a kingdom mentality and a heart of faith, God is capable of bringing forth joy amid the difficulty.

The joy of the Lord is our strength, which counteracts the devil’s tactic of wearing us down.

Nehemiah 8:10:…for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Romans 5:3-4: And not only that but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

What are a few virtues that God wants to develop in our lives amid these trying circumstances?

  • Broken relationships – forgiveness,
  • Busy lifestyle – priorities,
  • Financial problems – the principle of giving and putting the kingdom first, etc.

James 1:2-4: My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Psalms 138:7-8: Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me. The LORD will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever; Do not forsake the works of Your hands.

Find Contentment In The Adversity

Philippians 4:11-13: Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

When we’re capable of discovering contentment, it releases God’s hand of provision inside the midst of the trial.

Philippians 4:19: And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Stay committed to Christ because the enemy wants to destroy us. He attacks us when we are vulnerable.

How To Deal With Disappointment is the usual experience of life. Numerous matters in life disappoint us.

Events disappoint us; we excitedly plan to attend some event only to find it fails to come anywhere near our hopes or expectations.

Things tend to disappoint us; we store up and purchase something, only to find it doesn’t match up to how it was advertised; what looked so real in the advert seems to be cheap.

The Greatest Disappointments We Will Ever Experience Involve People

Those who let us down, don’t do what they promised; people who don’t appreciate what we do for them; people who tell us one issue then do the very opposite; people who harm our emotions – intentionally or by accident through misunderstandings, broken promise or unkind words.

In life we all have to deal with people, so we need to know how to deal with the disappointments they will bring to our lives.

One of the secrets and techniques of success in lifestyles is learning the way to deal with people that disappoint us.

One man in the Bible was an expert when it came to managing humans.

His name was Moses.

Moses knew a way to cope with disappointments. He happened to be the most patient man alive in his day.

No man put up with more complaining than Moses. It seems that the favorite occupation of the nation of Israel was to complain about anything and everything Moses did.

It was this complaining that caused God to force them to wander in the desert for 40 years. As the Israelites failed one, test God set them, God gave them another.

Hebrews 3: 7-11 [NIV]: So as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years you saw what I did.’ That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’

Israel was very quick to criticize Moses, their leader, challenge his leadership, doubt his decisions and question his motives. The Israelites had many “water problems” during their exodus from Egypt. The first was too much water to cross at the Red Sea. Then only days later, the Israelites had another “water problem.

Exodus 14: 9-12 [NIV]: The Egyptians – all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen and troops – pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon. As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, ‘Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn’t we say to you in Egypt ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than die in the desert!’

Very little time had passed since the miraculous escape from Egypt as a result of the devastating plagues brought on by God.

This was the first hiccup in their triumphant march, and who received the blame? Moses! What must Moses have thought? Is this what I get for all I have done for these people?

Exodus 15:22 [NIV]: Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the desert of Shur.

For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.

This time, it was a lack of water. This was followed by another “water problem” at Marah.

Exodus 15:23 [NIV]: When they came to Marah they could not drink its water because it was bitter.

(Marah means bitter which is why the place is called Marah).

The water they did find was undrinkable, so who did they blame?

Exodus 15:24 [NIV]: So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”

Poor old Moses, once again, his people are grumbling.

Why Then Did GOD Lead The Israelites To Marah?

Exodus15:25-27 [NIV]: Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water and the water became sweet. There the Lord made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them. He said, ‘If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His eyes, if you pay attention to His commands and keep all His decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals you.’ Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.

From this passage of Scripture and how God, through Moses, reacted, we can learn several facts about dealing with disappointments and difficulties. 

The Greatest Successes In Life Are Often Followed By Failure

This was only three days after their victory over the Egyptians at the Red Sea.

They must have still been in great spirits, “flying high,” only to be suddenly brought down by the failure to find something simple and stable in life – water!

Each new day brings its problems. After every “mountain top,” there is always a valley.

Another example of this happening was, after entry into the Promised Land, by the next generation of Israelites.

They experienced a great victory against the largest and most fortified city in the land, Jericho, only to be humiliated by a defeat at the hands of the tiny town of Ai as a result of being overconfident after their great success.

It is the “Ai” of life that causes us disappointments.

The significant problems we may look to God to solve, but the small ones we feel self-confident enough to cope without God’s help, and we end up disappointed by our failure.

When we experience a big success in life, watch out, we could be about to experience a failure.

Just like the Israelites, God tests us by allowing us to experience opportunities for how to deal with disappointment to see if we trust Him by seeking His help in all facets of our lives.

Let’s be clear the Scripture does NOT say that the Red Sea crossing was a test.

God revealed His character and power at the Red Sea.

There was a test at Marah to unveil the character and weakness of “Man.”

The people did not have any faith in God at the Red Sea.

God opened up the pathway to show His power and protection of His chosen people.

The people showed their lack of faith in God at Marah only three days after God had revealed how he would use His power to protect and provide all their need.

God’s character was shown at the Red Sea, man’s nature at Marah.

God’s character is involved in the significant incidents in our lives; our character is shown in the little day by day incidents of life.

The Greatest Services In Life Often Followed By Forgetfulness

Exodus 15:24 [NIV]: So the people grumbled against Moses saying, What are we to drink?

Israel had such a short memory of the beautiful things God had just done for them only a few days before. Three days on, Israel was doubting God and criticizing Moses, the leader He had given them.

Their motto seemed to be “When in doubt, grumble against Moses.”

The poor man: one day he was a hero, the next a zero! One minute the star, the next the scapegoat.

It Is Human Nature To Forget Quickly The Kindness Expressed To Us

Children forget what their parents have done to give them a good start in life.

Employers forget the past faithfulness and dedication of employees. Married couples soon take each other for granted.

Don’t Curse The Opportunity Understand How To Deal With Disappointment

Romans 12:14 [NIV]: Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Don’t try to get even or retaliate.

Moses could have responded by telling those who grumbled against him to “find their way back to Egypt if that is what they wanted.

Most of us, when hurt by others who disappoint us, create very inventive ways to get even.

I sometimes feel that in resentment, we reach this peak of our creativity. “I’ll do this, this and this and the person I am angry with won’t know what hit them!”

But the moment we start to retaliate God stops defending us.

Who is going to do a better job of resetting the balance: us or God?

Romans 12:19 [NIV]: Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord.”

When we let God settle the score, we are well represented.

Don’t Rehearse Disappointments

Job 5:2 [GNB]: To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do!

Ephesians 4:31 [NIV]:

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

When we go over a disappointment in our mind, again and again, it just becomes more prominent, more cynical, and discouraging.

This is a hazardous habit because grumbling can become addictive, and very soon, our whole life can be consumed by it.

Philippians 3:13 [LB]: I am still not all I should be but I am bringing all my energies to bear on this one thing: forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God is calling us.

We cannot change the disappointments of the past, but we can learn and mature from them.

We can influence the present with a positive, hopeful attitude. We can then put the future in the capable hands of God, expecting His help and intervention.

Do not Nurse Disappointments

Ephesians 4:26-27[LB]: If you are angry, do not sin by nursing your grudge. Don’t let the sun go down with you still angry. Get over it quickly. For when you are angry, you give a mighty foothold to the devil.

When we hold onto anger generated out of a disappointment, we allow Satan to influence us because anger very soon turns to resentment and bitterness.

Job 18:4 [LB]: Just because you tear your clothes in anger, is this going to start an earthquake? Shall we all go and hide?

We are only hurting ourselves when we continue to be angry over a disappointment.

I like the irony of the Living Bible translation of this verse.

Those around us comprehend how we are hurting ourselves while the rest of the world goes on, mostly unaffected.

To hold onto a disappointment causes us to build a protective wall around ourselves so as not to be hurt again.

This destroys any meaningful relationships with God or other people.

If we are trying to please everybody, we are setting ourselves up for disappointments.

God knows He can’t please everyone. Are we likely to do a better job than God?

I don’t even please myself a lot of the time. I’m often disappointed in myself!

How can I expect to please everyone else or to avoid disappointments?

What Do We Do With Disappointments?

What did Moses do?

Exodus 15:25 [NIV]: Then Moses cried out to the Lord

We should strive to be more like Moses. We should cry out to God more often then we do.

We Disperse The Disappointment

We give disappointment to God. We don’t hang on to it.

1 Peter 5:7 [LB]: Let Him [God] have all your worries and cares, for He is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.

When we are disappointed, it is of little use talking to others about it, for they cannot do much to help. We speak to God about it, who does have the power and desire to cause us to deal with disappointments and profit from them.

Romans 8:28 [GNB]: We know that in all things God works for good with those who love Him, those whom He has called according to His purpose.

“We know” – Do we? Whenever we read this statement in God’s word, we need to pause and ask ourselves do we know, do we have complete faith in this statement.

All things” – This includes the many disappointments we will face in life.

“Who love Him” – We often talk to those we love and continuously share our lives with them. This includes God.

Called” – It was God who called us, not our seeking God.

His purpose” – Constantly we must seek God’s will for our lives, not our selfish whims. This may mean leaving our comfort zone and becoming involved in activities that are beyond our natural abilities, where we are dependent on God-given power and skills.

Let God Reverse The Disappointments

The life of Joseph is a beautiful example of God doing this.

Because of envy, Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery.

The next few years of Joseph’s life were all downhill because of people hurting him intentionally.

Joseph had every reason to be “eaten up” with disappointment but God in due time-reversed all this evil that was done against Joseph and caused him to be placed in a position where he could save his own family as well as Egypt and the surrounding nations from famine.

Notice how Joseph sums up the events that happened in his life:

Genesis 50:2 [LB]: As far as I am concerned, God turned into good what you meant for evil, for He brought me to this high position I have today so that I could save the lives of many people.

Some people disappoint us and hurt us in life, intentionally or unintentionally.

They want us to fail. The enemy means it for evil, but God turns it into good. If we are Christian, nothing comes into our lives by accident. It is all “Father-filtered.”

Even the hurts and disappointments are intended to teach us something, so let God reverse them for good.

When we handle our disappointments in the way, God wants us to, by:-

Exodus 15:25 [LB]: Moses pleaded with the Lord to help them and the Lord showed him a tree to throw into the water and the water became sweet.

Notice, God did not specially create a tree to solve the problem of bitter water. It was already there. God had prepared the solution to their disappointing experience in advance.

If Moses had been wrapped up in self-pity, he would never have seen the solution to his disappointment, not seen what could turn bitterness into sweetness.

When we curse, rehearse, or nurse our disappointment, we will continue to be blinded to the solution God already has for us to reverse the frustration.

The greatest successes in life are often followed by failures.

The most excellent services in life are often followed by forgetfulness, yet the most significant shortages are usually followed by fullness.

Exodus 15:27 [LB]: And they came to Elim where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there beside the springs.

God gave them to vacation at “palm springs” (just a little joke).

This was paradise in the middle of the dry, forbidding desert and God let them spend over a month there before they moved on.

How Far Is Elim From Marah?

Elim is only five miles from Marah!

Israel stopped at Marah complaining, grumbling, being negative when Elim was just around the corner, only part of a day’s journey away.

Too often we STOP to soon!

We stop at Marah, discouraged and disappointed and bitter and we stay there. The message is: Don’t quit because Elim is just ahead of us on our journey in life.

How Do We Get From Marah To Elim?

God knew exactly where the Israelites were and where Elim was, but God did not perform a miracle and bring Elim to them.

The Israelites got to Elim by continuing their journey and not giving up in spite of their feelings.

The fact is that most things are done in this world by people who don’t feel like accomplishing them.

Maturity Is Living By Our Commitments Not Our Feelings

You may have heard this joke: One morning, Glen woke up and said to his mother, “I don’t want to go to Church today. I don’t feel like it.”

His mother replied, “But you must go to Church.” Glen replied, “No, I don’t want to go to Church.

Why should I?”

“For two reasons,” said his mother, “one, you are forty-five years old and two, you’re the pastor”!

Even if we don’t feel like going on because we are in “Marah” which may be a physical “Marah” of pain or a mental “Marah” of stress in our job or relationships, God knows exactly where we are and what we are feeling.

Marah is on His map for our lives but so is Elim and He is telling us to keep on keeping on because Elim is just up ahead.

The Real Issue Is How Long Are We Going To Stay In The Bitterness Of Marah’s Disappointment?

When are we going to stop:

  • cursing our disappointment
  • nursing our disappointment
  • rehearsing our regret

Instead of taking it to God and letting Him:

  • disperse our frustration
  • reverse our disappointment then
  • carry on and find our “Elim.”

God Led The Israelites To Marah As A Test Of Their Maturity

God will lead us through “Marah” many times in our lives for the very same reason: to help us mature through disappointments. This is How To Deal With Disappointment.

Has something in your life become bitter- now that was at one time so sweet? Perhaps your marriage, friendship, a career, your health?

What are we to do?

Give it to God, and He will show us, as He did to Moses, what can turn that bitterness of disappointment into sweetness once more.

What Is God’s Solution To Our Bitterness?

It is a tree!

Just as God used a tree, that He had prepared long before, to turn bitterness into sweetness for the Israelites, so God took a tree on Mount Calvary and hung His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, on it to trade the bitterness and guilt of sin into the sweetness of righteousness (Exodus:15:25).

If you haven’t known the relationship of someone who will never let you down, never cause you disappointment, I invite you right now to begin that relationship with Jesus Christ.

All you have to do is to invite Him into your life humbly. Ask Him to be your Lord and Saviour. He is the One who directs your life from now on. And Jesus is who saves you from the bitterness of sin; through faith in what He did for you on the cross.

Romans 10:11 [GNB]: The Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.’


Because God has a great plan for each of us, and He uses everything in our lives to further that plan, which starts on a tree on Mount Calvary.

Disappointments then become Jesus Christ’s appointments, and Elim is just down the road.

Developing, growing, and keeping a healthy relationship is similar to dancing. Have you ever watched a dance tournament? I love to watch well-rehearsed seamless movements. When the couple is in perfect unity, it looks like their attached with invisible strings effortlessly moving as one unit.

I have watched several films which center around a dance tournament. Many of these films have an underdog that learns to dance. The character always learns that dancing is much more than merely following a chart of movements.

The peer instructor will take the time to teach the art of dance.

Picture it with me; he stands in front of her with his shoulders squared and palms up. She sets her hands upon his palm to palm.

He begins to confidently move with the music guiding her gracefully across the floor. Like a magnet, she sticks with him everywhere he goes.

The viewers watching this amalgamation (A combination of two or more patterns of movements.) know by his confidence that he has every move plained several moves in advance. He knows how he needs to position his body to get her body safely into the next position. Because of his strategy, she moves accordingly. Each has the other person’s safety in mind. They know that if either of them is hurt, it increases the likelihood of the other also receiving an injury.

She must feel his confident strength, which enables her to yield to his guidance. If either one hesitates, it will result in a misstep. The timing will then be off with the possibility of injury.

With many turns, dips, and full-body jesters, he takes her on a journey that can only come with an experienced, and knowledgable dancer.

Similarly, it is our responsibility to do everything we can to provide our relationship partner with an assurance that we are committed to the relationship. Also, we must exhibit that we are capable of being emotionally healthy. When the other person feels the unhealthy emotion, it forces them to be afraid of getting hurt. We may step on their toes a few times without negative feedback. Although, after a while, our partner will pull away, reserving their emotions for another dance partner.

So, we must do everything within ourselves to be emotionally healthy and dependable. If we do not take care of ourselves, we will not be in the position to take care of someone else.

Work On Yоur Self-esteem

Think about the physics of the arm styling with the ballroom dance position. The handsome gentleman has left-hand outstretched to support her lovely right hand. The lady places her left-hand intently on his right shoulder. His right hand is supporting her back as it is holding her shoulder blade. These points of contact provide each dancer with leverage and stability.

With the proper tension, he can leverage her into the next position gently. She will maintain the feeling of security.

Communication in a relationship is similar to the cadence of music to which we dance.
We must pay close attention to our partner’s rhythms so that our progress within the relationship will glide into relationship growth.

The female receives support as he provides the appropriate pressure. If she cannot feel the comfort of proper strength, she feels uneasy with her dance partner.

We can see this in relationships. We must have a balance between security and tension; if the pressure remains in the wrong place, the body cannot be leveraged appropriately, which results in insecurity. If the presser is in the correct position, but still too hard of a grip, it will result in injury. Not adequate pressure and the dancers will feel unsafe with that partner.

We must communicate clearly with our partners so that the security and tension of the relationship have proper leverage for both partners to feel safe and secure.

We must communicate well with our partners. We must listen to our partners. Communication in a relationship is similar to the cadence of music to which we dance. Fight or Flight

During the ‘fight or flight’ response, the adrenal gland with sending out cortisol, a stress hormone to help respond to the stressful situation. During the ‘fight or flight’ response, the body has a blended effort from our nerves and hormones, which tells our body to stay alive at any cost. This prompts the adrenal glands (at the top of the kidneys), to send out hormones.

Among these hormones are cortisol, the primary stress hormone, and adrenaline. The adrenaline will raise the heart rate, and blood pressure along with providing the body with energy to ‘fight or flight.’ Cortisol flows into increases sugars (glucose) in the bloodstream, stimulate the brain to process the glucose and increase the production of the cells to repair.

During the process, cortisol will also retard nonvital functions to have the body focus on survival. While cortisol is taking charge, it also takes control of the growth process, digestive system, reproductive system, and the immune system. Cortisol also takes charge of our emotional state.

You may imagine that a prolonged period under stress will put a lot of unfair ware on our bodies functions. Yes, cortisol will save your life. But, an overabundance of cortisol and other survival hormones will kill you.

In fact, chronic stress will cause the hippocampus and the left prefrontal cortex to shut off the flow of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). The job of CRH is to activate the pituitary gland to send out the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). The ACTH jumps into the bloodstream which takes to the adrenal glands to tell it to sent steroid hormones throughout the body. When the adrenal gland shuts don the production of steroids, it is in effect shutting down the stress response.

We cannot remain high from the survival hormones forever. So, the body will shut off the survival hormones for our safety. However, prolonged exposer to stress will cause damage to this system.

When the body is in chronic stress, this process of hormone flow takes place to much. Frequent exposure will damage the hippocampus. When the hippocampus is damaged, it cannot function properly. It will be unable to stop the flow of the stress hormones. It is like having a busted water pipe in your house. There is little to no resistance, so the water-free flows. With the hippocampus damaged the stress hormones flow freely.

When we spend too much time in stress, these survival hormones are putting unnecessary strain on our body and deteriorating our overall health. This will develop into a debilitating and (often) death.

As the body is flooded with these hоrmоnаs over and over, our body is actually abusing itself. This reduces the strength of the immune system, so we are more likely to get sick. Personality disorders can develop because of our hоrmоnаs being unbalanced.

Just one or a cross-section of many of the problems associated with anxiety can take over and destroy our lives. This is a descending process. Our personal relationships, health, and finances will pulsate with pain. Eventually, this long-term unwanted enemy will manifest as a deteriorating disease.

Solutions to Stress

Do not wait any longer. Take control of your life today.

  3. Reach out to friends and family.
  4. Find an excellent Christ-centered church, attend regularly
  5. Ask for help from community organizations.
  6. Read some good books that focus on positive thinking.
  7.  Shave (or trim)
  8. Shower- maintaining good hygiene builds self-confidence.
  9. Get up and get the body moving. You may not be able to join the Gym. But moving the body will help lower stress.
  10. Meditate
  11. Start a writing process. Write out your feelings in detail. Writing will help provide an outlet for the pinned up negative emotions.
  12. Decide that you will make TODAY be that day that your life better will get better. This is probably the most critical point. If you do not make the conscience choice to get healthy, you will rot in your stress.

Regardless of how much control stress has over your life right now. You do not have to let stress kill you.

Keto Diet and Stress

The Keto diet resets and strengthens the immune system. Inflammation in the body will create poor health and high levels of stress.
